Poker Machine Reform will continue

ACGT Media Release

Australian Churches Gambling Taskforce Chair Rev Tim Costello said today’s decision to postpone poker machine reform has dealt a harsh blow to some of Australia’s most vulnerable citizens.

Speaking shortly after the Prime Minister’s announcement, Rev Costello urged all politicians of good will to focus on the interests of those Australians living with the reality of poker machine addiction – individuals, families, friends and colleagues.

“This Government can still deliver solid social policy that will modify the machines, and limit the harm caused by poker machine gambling.

“Debate during the recent opportunity for change has brought the damage caused by poker machines to the consciousness of the media, commentators and a very broad Australian public.

“These people are now better informed, and most see the need for reform.

“Polling has consistently shown that Australians support measures to limit the harm caused by poker machines.

“The Australian Churches Gambling Taskforce, which supports both mandatory pre commitment measures and $1 maximum bets as part of a suite of necessary measures, will continue to work with all politicians to ensure the reforms outlined today remain relevant and on track.

“The industry, predictably, backs neither option, as both will significantly reduce their profits.

“Let’s not forget, Australia’s $12 billion poker machine industry survives largely on the back of vulnerable Australians in the grip of addiction.

“The industry may have won the battle, but they won’t win the war,” Rev Costello said.
